SWS(Shielded Work Station) (in SFDS)

The SWS, located inside the SFDS, performs welding and shielding operations
and is exclusively manufactured by Moojin Keeyeon Co., Ltd. It has been exported to
the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in China and the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania,
and has also been supplied to the Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 in South Korea


The equipment used for the dry storage of spent fuel after its use in power generation in heavy water reactors is called the SFDS (Spent Fuel Drying Storage) System. The SFDS consists of two parts: the SWS (Shielded Work Station) and the FHT (Fuel Handling Tool).

Spent nuclear fuel from Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) is stored wet, while it is stored dry in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs).

The SWS uses the FHT (Fuel Handling Tool) to remove the spent fuel from the pool, place it in a fuel basket, transfer it to the SWS, and then dry it with hot air before welding.

Since spent nuclear fuel is highly radioactive and must be handled in a shielded environment, this shielding equipment is used.
